The
goal of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 is to
ensure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women in
the nation. This Act, which established the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) in the Department of Labor, provides for research,
information, education, and training in the field of occupational safety
and health and authorizes enforcement of OSHA standards. The use of
personal protective equipment is an important process that should be used
by each and every employee. Using personal protective equipment requires
hazard awareness and training on the part of the user. Employees must be
aware that the equipment does not eliminate the hazard. If the equipment
fails, exposure will occur. To reduce the possibility of failure,
equipment must be properly fitted and maintained in a clean and
serviceable condition.
